Amalek Narrative Symbolizes Ancient And Present Day Foes

Netanyahu Invokes Amalek in Gaza Speech

Amalek Narrative Symbolizes Ancient and Present-Day Foes

Netanyahu's Invocation Draws Parallels Between Biblical and Modern Conflicts

In a fiery speech justifying the expansion of Israel's ground operation in Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invoked the biblical narrative of the Amalekites, drawing parallels between ancient foes and present-day adversaries.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) explained that when Netanyahu used the biblical quotation "Remember what Amalek did to you," he was describing the current conflict as a battle against those who seek to harm Israel.

Specifically, Netanyahu referenced the biblical injunction to "remember what the Amalekites did to the Israelites." He stated that Israel remembers and is fighting to prevent harm to civilians.

Netanyahu's reference to Amalek came during a speech delivered in Jerusalem yesterday, following the Israeli Defense Forces' (IDF) decision to expand their ground operation in Gaza in response to continued rocket fire from Hamas and other militant groups.
