Bluetongue Disease Confirmed in All Dutch Provinces

Dutch Ministry and Local Government Take Action

The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) and the Animal Health Service (GD) have confirmed the presence of bluetongue disease in all 12 Dutch provinces. The disease was first reported in the Netherlands in September 2023, and has since spread rapidly over a large area.

Bluetongue Virus Serotype 3 Detected in Netherlands

The virus that has been detected in the Netherlands is bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3). This virus is known to cause disease in cattle, sheep, and goats. The virus is transmitted by midges, and can spread both within and between herds.

Bluetongue Disease Can Cause Severe Illness in Animals

Bluetongue disease can cause a range of clinical signs in animals, including fever, swelling of the tongue and lips, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, the disease can be fatal. There is no specific treatment for bluetongue disease, but supportive care can help to reduce the symptoms and improve the chances of survival.
